phthalates - history |
|
Phthalates were first produced during the 1920s, and
have been produced in large quantities since the 1950s,
when PVC was introduced. DEHP was the
most commonly used phthalate.
Since 2001 The Environment Directorate-General of the
European Commission categorized DEHP, DBP and BBP as
„reproductive-toxic“. DEHP and DBP are also anticipated
to be a human carcinogen.
Therefore the use of the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP is
forbidden in certain groups of products:
- toys
- baby articles
- dye und coloring cosmetics
The use of DINP, DIDP and DNOP (Di-n-octylphthalat) is
also forbidden for toys and baby clothes.
