phthalates - definition |
|
Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers
for plastics. It increases the softness, flexibility and
better processing of plastics. Products of plasticized PVC consists
up to 35 percent of plasticizers.
Phthalate rank among so called SVOC (Semi-Volatile Organic
Compounds). Plasticizers are chemically unbounded and therefore they
are
evaporating slowly, but permanently from the products.
The most popular phthalates are:
- DIDP (Di-isodecyl-phthalat)
- DINP (Di-isononyl-phthalat)
- DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalat)
- DBP (Dibutylphtha-lat)
- BBP (Benzylbutylphthalat)
DEHP was the most commonly used phthalate. Due to
the risk of damaging the genotype it was replaced by
DEHP, DINP and DIDP. DEHP and DBP are both listed as
reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.
